Student ProgramsWhat Does Freedom Mean To You?
What Does Freedom Mean To You? is a program currently in development and designed specifically for student groups visiting the Stevens & Smith Center. This program explores what freedom has meant to Americans, especially African Americans, over the course of US history.
While exploring the past, the program pushes students to see how understanding history can help us understand ourselves. By exploring the history of freedom and learning about historical freedom seekers, young people will build personal connections to the past that can foster self-exploration as well as empathy and compassion for those still fighting for freedom today.
The program will include pre- and post- visit curriculum and interactive experiences at the Stevens & Smith Center and in the surrounding neighborhood. This program is recommended for grades 7-12.
If you’re interested in bringing a student group to test out this program, we’d love to hear from you! At this time, we can only accommodate groups of 25 or less. Email education@lancasterhistory.org for more information.
