Mayor’s Register of Coloured Persons
On ViewFreedom & Slavery in Pennsylvania
Dated1820–1849
DescriptionFrom 1820 until 1849, free Black people living in or passing through Lancaster City were required to register at the mayor’s office so authorities could track their movements and activities. Though not everyone complied with the ordinance, the over 300 entries in this ledger provide insight into the occupations, family dynamics, and residences of those who registered.
